The Canadian government be a total spaz. I don't really expect most people to have been following what's been going on up here the past six months or so, though perhaps you heard about Galloway being banned from the country (honestly I do not like him for a number of reasons but that is ridiculous any way you slice it), potential new Mccarthyism and the ruling party as well as the Liberals have personally been waging campaigns against Apartheid Week and visiting University campuses to pressure them to not host the event, not to mention immigration raids(yes we have those here too.) That is just scratching the surface.
On a semi-related note, a few of Muslimah Media Watch's people started a brilliant blog called Muslim Lookout, dedicated to looking at the Canadian media's discourse on Muslims, immigrants and other racialized Canadians. Check them out.

Nadia,
George Galloway, I think he is one of the corrupt politicians and journalists who were involved in the so called Oil-Voucher Scandal. I don't think he is a reliable politician.
Thanks,
I think if memory serves me correctly, that he was cleared of the charges of that particular scandal, correct me if I'm wrong.
As I said in the post I don't like him, but I still think that there was no reason for him to be denied the right to speak his views, however much I disagree with them. That's one of the catches of living in a democratic country.
Nadia,
I don't know who cleared him but I think he and others should be brought to face the court of justice with all evidences against him to be presented by the complainant which is in this case the Iraqi people or whoever is going to act on their behalf . If he cleared after such a fair court then I would say he is clean.
No doubt the freedom of expression is essential in any democracy. I fully agree with you.
The question is -in general and not related to Galloway- do we need to provide some safeguards in place to protect democracy -including freedom of expression- from abuses?
What do you think Nadia?
Thanks,
In general I am for limits on hate speech, how to establish what constitues that is extremely tricky, however. White supremacist groups are a pretty good example, though.
It's my understanding that Galloway was investigated and so was that whole scandal, regardless that is what it is: irrelevant to the events I'm talking about here and the reasons for which he was denied entry, and since both the UK and US didn't feel it was necessary to act as the Canadian government did, unilaterally.
If we barred every corrupt/annoying politician from speaking, that would be something else entirely.
Thanks Nadia I think we both used our freedom of expression in the best possible way. We might agree or not agree, it does n't matter, the most important thing is to accept the fact that we have to show our respect for other people's views. Also we need to know that for each view there's an opposite view that should be respected. However as you might accept, some times, there are Some exceptions.
Thanks,
Hey I'm glad we can discuss these things civilly! As I said before I don't like the guy, but whether he is guilty or not is for courts to decide, not at the whims of politicians that happen to disagree with him, I hope I made myself clear on that:)
Nadia you are clear and to be honest I enjoyed the discussion.
Take care,
Cheers
